Five Ways to Help an Anxious Dog

Some dogs suffer from anxiety and it is often difficult to know what causes it. As they can't talk to us and tell us what is making them upset, have to do our best to try to understand the cause, whether it’s separation anxiety, fear of other dogs, a dislike to loud noises such as fireworks or just being nervous in general. We want our dogs to be happy and stress free, here are five ways that could help to calm your dog down when he's anxious:
1. Exercise
Exercise often helps to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety and whilst not a cure, it can improve the general mood. Running and playing with your dog can be a great way to help him with his nerves. You should of course make sure that he is happy with the environment that you take him to walk/play in and that it is not somewhere too noisy or full of other boisterous dogs/children. If he is nervous of other dogs, try to take him out into the country side if possible. If you have a friend with a well behaved, gentle dog, try walking together, you may find the presence of another dog helps your dog to feel more confident and less nervous.
2. Physical Contact
Dogs are sociable animals and being near to your dog is sometimes all that is required to make them feel safe. Comforting your dog when they get anxious owing to thunderstorms or visits to the vet will often make them feel better, as they like to have physical contract from the humans they love. It is important not to leave your dog if you know there are going to be events that will frighten them, i.e. Bonfire Nights/Halloween when there is likely to be lots of noise.
3. Calming Treats & Chews
There are lots of different calming treats and chews available. Some are given as treats during times of stress, whilst others are long-lasting and designed for times when you have to leave your dog. Your vet can advise on the best choice for your dog.
4. Crates
If your dog is used to the crate it can be a comfort zone for him when he feels anxious. Try putting some of his favorite toys in there and perhaps one of your jumpers so he can smell your scent. If your dog isn’t keen on the crate, try to make a place for him where he feels safe, perhaps on his dog bed, on the sofa with you or in a quiet room that he feels happy in.
5. Aromatherapy
Many people believe that aromatherapy helps with anxiety in dogs. There are sprays that you can use around your home and on your dog or ‘plug ins’ that emit calming aromas and pheromones. You should however, use essential oils that have been specifically tailored for dogs as human ones can be too strong and are sometimes toxic. Your local Vet should be able to recommend a suitable brand.

Tips for a stress free bonfire night

Ways to keep your dog calm on Bonfire Night
Whilst some people and especially children love bonfire night, it can be a particularly stressful time for dogs (and other pets). Here are some tips to keep your dog happy and safe. Don’t take your dog to a firework display or leave him tied up in the garden whilst fireworks are being let off. Even if your dog doesn’t whimper don’t assume he is happy, excessive yawning and panting can indicate that he is feeling stressed. Try to find out if any major firework displays have been planned near you or if your neighbours are having a party and if so, what time it's occurring, so you can be prepared for the sudden noise and flashes of light, and perhaps move to a quieter part of your home. Close your curtains to reduce noise and frightening flashes of light, turn up the TV or radio and behave as normal, as your dog will pick up on any stress or anger you feel and may feel he's done something wrong. Make a safe haven for your dog, put his favorite toys in his bed with a blanket or on the sofa so he feels secure and comfortable. Your dog may try to retreat to somewhere he feels safer, for example under your bed, don’t try to tempt him out as this may stress him. Talk calmly to him and take him a favorite toy or blanket. You might want to give him one of your old jumpers so he can smell you and feel secure. If your dog needs to go out when fireworks are going off outside, keep him on his lead, even if he is in the garden, a sudden noise or bang could frighten him and cause him to run off. If you have visitors, make sure your dog is securely in the room before you open the front door. If your dog comes to you for comfort, don’t ignore him, stroke him and talk calmly to him, don't forget to keep his water bowl topped up as an anxious dog will pant more and get thirsty. If you’re dog is very nervous or has got very stressed in previous years, speak to your vet who will be able to offer advice. Above all remember it is natural for your dog to be scared of loud noises, don't try to 'make him face his fears' or be cross with him, he trusts you and will rely on you for comfort and love.

It’s Puppy Love

He's so reliant on you for his needs
You’ve brought your new puppy home, he’s tiny, cuddly, cute and totally dependent on you for his walks, toys, welfare, companionship and dietary choices. To enable him to grow up and be healthy and strong a puppy needs food that is high in protein and has been enriched with minerals, vitamins and fats that are so essential for his growth. Your puppy has an immature stomach and therefore his food should be easy for him to digest. However, you shouldn't over feed your puppy as this can put strains on his developing bones and joints. You obviously want to provide your puppy with the best, so what should you feed him? At the Green Dog, we recommend feeding your new four-legged friend Yarrah Organic Dog Food for puppies. Which has been especially formulated to contain all the nutrients your new puppy will need. It is also 100% certified Bio-Organic, making it a healthy, tasty natural food for your dog. It is easily digestible and minimizes the chance of him developing stomach problems and allergies. Yarrah has an organic certification so you are safe in the knowledge that all the grains used in the food are fairly traded. Why not treat your puppy to a delicious natural food today

Water An average dog requires between 55-10 ml of water a day per kilogram of his weight. This will vary according to various scenarios such as the weather, how much he has exercised, illness, but clean water should always be readily available for you dog. 2. Nutritional Food A healthy dog needs the right nutrition in his food. Dogs will have different nutritional needs at various stages of their lives, for instance, an older dog has much different needs to that of a young puppy and of course some dogs are sensitive to certain ingredients in dog food. You should feed your dog at least once a day. At the Green Dog, we recommend giving your dog natural organic dog food from brands such as Yarrah, who provide differently formulated food for puppies, adult dogs, small breeds, sensitive dogs and senior dogs, all of which are 100% certified organic and include gluten-free options for sensitive dogs needs. 3. Lead & Collar/Harness Many councils have ruled that dogs should be kept on a lead in public places and some impose heavy fines for noncompliance. It is also a good ideal to keep your dog on a lead in areas that are busy with traffic or people as some dogs can get nervous. It is essential that your dog's collar or harness is the right size for him to ensure that it fits well and is comfortable for him to wear. Our guide to measuring your dog will advise you on the right sizes to choose. 5. Tips for a happy bathtime

How to make bath time a better experience for your dog
Spring is here and after doing the Spring Cleaning you’re probably thinking about giving your dog a bath. After a long winter and many muddy walks he probably is in need of a nice wash. Whilst some dogs enjoy their baths some aren’t so keen. Here are some tips to make it a happier experience for both you and your dog.

Assemble everything you need first. Like a small child, your dog is unlikely to sit in the bath while you go off to get the forgotten towel.

Make sure the water isn't too hot - he can't tell you. You can always test the temperature by using your elbow.

Brush your dog before he gets into the bath especially if he has a long coat.

Talk to your dog in a calm and reassuring voice as he may not be enjoying the bath.

Wet his fur using water in a jug or a shower attachment (again test the water temperature)

Wash him with a specialist dog shampoo - our range of Simbae dogs shampoos are made from natural and organic ingredients and are paraben and phthalate free.

Rinse your dog well, holding his head up to ensure no shampoo gets into his eyes. Remove him from the bath and towel dry. Remember: your dog will shake himself dry so don't put him near anything you don't want to get wet!

Reward your dog with a treat, this will let him know he's been well-behaved and that bath time is nothing to fear.

To treat you and your dog this Easter we are offering a special discount on our Simbae range of conditioners. Buy any Simbae dog shampoo and get a 50% Discount on the conditioner when brought at the same time. Please use code: SP50 at our online shop. [caption id="attachment_547" align="alignleft" width="300"] Organic Dog Shampoo for a happy bathtime[/caption]

Lead or Harness?

Which is Best for Your Dog?
One of the frequent questions we get asked is which is best - a lead and collar or a harness? Whilst there has been a recent trend for people buying harnesses for their dogs, it really depends what is best suited to your dog. Just like people each dog is individual and have different requirements and personalities. When deciding on a lead or harness you should take into consideration:

your dog's personality

obedience

size

any medical conditions

Leads & Collars
The Lead is the traditional way to walk the dog and it is easy to take off the lead, where suitable, to let your dog run free, chase balls and play. This method is best for dogs that are obedient and who will walk happily by your side without pulling or lunging at other dogs, as this could damage their throats. Collars are also relatively inexpensive and are available in a wide range of colours and styles.
Dog Harnesses
Harnesses are good for dogs that pull or lung when they walk, as they give you more control over the dog. They are available in many different styles, colours and materials. A Harness is also good for Toy Breeds, such as poodles, as a collar can be damaging to their neck if they are delicate. Dogs who have a predisposition to breathing problems are also better on a harness.
Should the Harness be a Front or Back Attached One?
Most trainers recommend a front attaching harness for larger dogs as it gives more control when walking the dog, especially if he is prone to pulling or lunging at other dogs or cats, as a back attaching harness won't give you much control over a dog that pulls. A back harness is more suited to well behaved dogs, Toy and smaller breeds of dogs who may find a front attachment harness uncomfortable. Whichever you choose, it is important that the harness is a comfortable fit for your dog. See our guide on how to measure your dog.
What's Your Preferred Method?
Email ellie@thegreendog.co.uk and let us know which method you prefer (send a picture for our gallery) and we will send you a 10% Discount Voucher for use in our on-line store
